The family moved to Lansing, Michigan, in 1929 and there Malcolm X’s memories were of his father’s rousing sermons and the beatings the minister gave his wife and children. Malcolm X believed his father to be a victim of brainwashing by white people, who infected blacks with self-hatred therefore he would pass down a form of the abuse he received as a black man. After his father was killed, the state welfare representatives began to frequent the house, and it seemed to Malcolm X that they were harassing his mother. Terribly stricken by her husband’s death and buckling under the demands of raising many children, Louise Little became psychologically unstable and was institutionalized until 1963. In his autobiography, he used his own young adulthood to illustrate larger ideas about the racist climate in the United States. In high school, Malcolm began to fight what would be a lifelong battle of personal ambition versus general racist preconception. Lansing did not hold many opportunities of any kind for a young black man then, so without a particular plan, Malcolm X went to live with his half-sister, Ella, in Boston. Malcolm X looked, and almost immediately found trouble. He fell in with a group of gamblers and thieves, and began shining shoes at the Roseland State Ballroom. There he learned the trades that would eventually take him to jail dealing in bootleg liquor and illegal drugs. Malcolm X characterized his life then as one completely lacking in self-respect. Many journalists would emphasize Malcolm X’s â€Å"shady† past when describing the older man, his clean-cut lifestyle, and the aims of the Nation of Islam. In some cases, these references were an attempt to damage Malcolm X’s credibility, but economically disadvantaged people have found his early years to be a point of commonality, and Malcolm X himself was proud of how far he had come. He spared no detail of his youth in his autobiography, and used his Nation of Islam ideas to interpret them. Dancing, drinking, and even his hair style were represented by Malcolm X to be marks of shame and self-hatred. Relaxed hair in particular was an anathema to Malcolm X for the rest of his life; he described his first â€Å"conk† in the autobiography this way: â€Å"This was my first really big step toward self-degradation: when I endured all of that pain of the hair-straightening chemicals, literally burning my flesh to have it look like a white man’s hair. I had joined that multitude of Negro men and women in America who are brainwashed into believing that the black people are inferior and white people superior that they will even violate and mutilate their God-created bodies to try to look pretty by white standards†¦. It makes you wonder if the Negro has completely lost his sense of identity, lost touch with himself. † It was while Malcolm X was in prison that he was introduced to the ideas of Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam. Fundamentally, the group believes in the racial superiority of blacks, a belief supported by a complex genesis fable, which includes an envious, evil white scientist who put a curse on blacks. The faith became a focus for Malcolm X’s fury about his treatment and his family’s at the hands of whites, about the lack of opportunity he had as a young black man, and the psychological damage of systematic anti-black racism that is, the damage of self-hatred. Malcolm X quoted â€Å"I found out that the history-whitening process either had left out great things that black men had done, or the great black men had gotten whitened. The group also emphasizes scrupulous personal habits, including cleanliness and perfect grooming, and forbids smoking, drinking, and the eating of pork, as well as other traditional Muslim dietary restrictions. When Malcolm X left prison in 1952, he went to work for Elijah Muhammad, and within a year was named assistant minister to Muslim Temple Number One in Detroit, Michigan. Malcolm X’s faith was inextricably linked to his worship of Elijah Muhammad. Everything Malcolm X accomplished was accomplished through Elijah Muhammad. I don’t care if it costs my life. † His devotion would be sorely tested, then destroyed within nine years. Muhammad had been the judge and jury for the Nation of Islam, and had sentenced many other Black Muslims to terms of silence, or excommunication, for adultery or other infractions of their religious code. Malcolm X discovered that Muhammad himself was guilty of adultery, and was appalled by his idol’s hypocrisy. Other ministers were vying for the kind of power and attention that Malcolm X had, and some speculate that these men filled Elijah Muhammad’s ears with ungenerous speculations about Malcolm X’s ambitions. A â€Å"hajj† is a pilgrimage to the holy land of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad; â€Å"Malik† was similar to Malcolm, and â€Å"Shabazz,† a family name. On March 8, 1964, Malcolm X had announced that he was leaving the Nation of Islam to form his own groups, Muslim Mosque, Inc. , and the Organization of Afro-American Unity. In an effort to express his dedication to Islam, and thereby establish a more educated religious underpinning for his new organization, Malcolm X declared he would make a hajj. His travels were enlarged to include a tour of Middle Eastern and African countries, including Egypt, Lebanon, Nigeria, and Ghana. These expeditions would expand Malcolm X in ways that would have seemed incredible to him earlier. â€Å"Packed in the plane to Jedda were white, black, brown, red, and yellow people, blue eyes and blond hair, and my kinky red hair all together, brothers! All honoring the same God Allah, all in turn giving equal honor to the other. † As a result of his experiences, Malcolm X gained a burgeoning understanding of a global unity and sympathy that stood behind America’s blacks—less isolated and more reinforced, he revised his formerly separatist notions. Still full of resolve, Malcolm X returned to the States with a new message. He felt that American blacks should go to the United Nations and demand their rights, not beg for them. When faced with a bevy of reporters upon his return, he told them, â€Å"The true Islam has shown me that a blanket indictment of all white people is as wrong as when whites make blanket indictments against blacks. † This new message, full of renewed vigor and an enlarged vision, plus the fact that the media was still listening to Malcolm X, was not well-received by the Nation of Islam. Malcolm X was aware that he was being followed by Black Muslims, and regularly received death threats. A few minutes into his message, three men stood and fired sixteen shots into Malcolm X, who died before medical help could arrive. Politically sophisticated, Malcolm X told everyone who would listen about the tenacious and pervasive restraints those centuries of racism had imposed on American blacks. Although Malcolm X’s own organizations were unsteady at the time of his death, the posthumous publication of his autobiography insures that his new and old philosophies will never be forgotten. In 1990, twenty-five years after his assassination, Malcolm X and his ideas were still a huge component in the ongoing debate about race relations. â€Å"Malcolm’s maxims on self-respect, self-reliance and economic empowerment seem acutely prescient,† said Newsweek in 1990. I shall argue that despite Nietzsche’s criticisms on the dogmas of Christian morality, values, and tradition, he extols principles that contribute to the emancipation of the individual self. It is in this regard that I agree with Nietzsche when he claims that a slave revolt has taken place, for along with this revolt was the degradation of the human subject as powerless, and thus stagnating one’s potentials for self-actualization. However, in order to understand Nietzsche’s contentions, it is important to understand first, what dominated his thoughts. One of the elements which is central to Nietzsche’s thought is illustrated in his famous declaration that, â€Å"God is Dead!† (â€Å"Thus Spoke† 77). This affirms a complete rejection of metaphysical and religious truths as grounds for reality. To Nietzsche, the existence of God, the afterlife, immortality are nothing but imaginary causes. In his view, such are nothing but mere projections of one’s psychological desire for security and calculability in life. In line with this, Nietzsche believed that once the existence of God is unveiled as an illusion, then it follows that God could no longer be implemented as the foundation for human ethical conducts. This leads to the assertion that all morals will be founded on the subjective will of individual self. Thus, Nietzsche affirmed the individual self as the basis of all inquires and norms. Based on this argument, we are led to the question on how can the individual achieve its highest level of affirmation i n a world without a divine providence? The answer to this query is found in the Nietzsche’s theory of the will to power. Nietzsche’s will to power is defined as â€Å"the drive to dominate the environment. This drive, so central is the will to power. This will to power is more than simply the will to survive. It is, rather, an inner drive to express a vigorous affirmation of all a person’s powers† (Stumpf 380). Given this, the will to power can be characterized as the inner propensity to dominate and assert superiority over one’s life. Furthermore, it allows individuals to reach their highest potentials through the overcoming of barriers and constraints. In this manner, individuals increase in power and vitality. However, Nietzsche cautioned us that if one decides to practice a certain code of ethics, the will to power gradually declines. By this, the individual weakens and suffers. Herein, Nietzsche accused Christianity for advocating virtues that undermine and destabilize one’s will to power. But prior to Nietzsche’s presentation of his criticisms towards the teachings of the Christian religion, he first explains how and why Christianity became the dominant religion in human society. Master Morality His explanation is found in his doctrine of the two-fold history of good and evil. This doctrine reveals that there were two types of moralities, which were practiced during the ancient Greeks. These are master morality or aristocratic morality and slave morality. For Nietzsche, Master morality is one that is founded upon the will to power. He claims: â€Å"What is good? – All that heightens the feeling of power, the will to power, power itself in man. What is bad? – All that proceeds from weakness. What is happiness? – the feeling that power increases – that a resistance is overcome† (â€Å"Twilight of† 127). Critical Analysis on the Philosophy of Education

A philosophy of education, as a requirement for admission to any sort of education program, has within it the inherent fault that it may not be a truthful reflection of the applicant. Defining an instructor's philosophy, in regards to any area of supposed expertise, often results in page upon page of self-platitudes, false impressions and the required buzzwords. Does such an exercise actually reflect on the true actions and intentions of the instructor in regards to his methodology, success and creativity in the classroom setting? Does it accurately reflect his relationship to his students, and vice versa? Is such a philosophy something that can be accurately described in mere words, or is it something better viewed in the physical space of learning? It appears that most philosophies beg, borrow and steal from the latest theories of what is considered to be the well-rounded educator. The writer is forced to fill the required assignment with various educational stances and statements while often never developing their own personal mission statement. They are often afraid to say what they truly believe in, instead stating what they think those that judge the work are seeking. Such a philosophy can be seen on paper, but is it visible in the classroom setting? Can you tell how talented, or horrible, a teacher I am from this simple reading? Or would a trip into my classroom for an entire day give a more comprehensive and factual assessment of my true educational philosophy. My philosophy, or what I practice everyday in the educational setting, is simple and memorable. This philosophy, which has so far been successful in my short career, is to actually know your students and treat them as individuals. When teaching becomes difficult, always remember that they are only kids. Each one is vastly different than the next, and no two are even remotely alike. Each has varied interests, faults, problems, successes and distractions. Each has different, though not necessarily wrong, expectations, results and goals. There are no perfect students, and each must be evaluated on their own personal gains. The first step in accomplishing this philosophy of respect is focused, as everything should be, on the student. So often teachers grumble about the absence of respect aimed towards them, all the while ignoring the need for the student's own validation of worthiness as an individual and simply not an occupied seat. Every year, six or seven students are removed from other classes and placed into mine. In each instance, demeaning remarks from an instructor orlack of communication? is the reason for the switch. I have found adapting my approach towards these students is often all that is needed to seem some educational gains. Does this mean that every student succeeds? Of course not, but those that make the effort without simply giving up do succeed, even if it is unnoticed by others. I attempt to do simple enforcement of this philosophy everyday in, and out of, the classroom. For example, I attempt to avoid being patronizing and condescending. I recommend teachers actually listen to the students when they talk, and when they do not utter a word. Treat all students the same, but also as individuals who are each unique in their own incredible way. They are just kids, so don't expect perfection. It is fine to set reasonable and challenging goals for students in relation to their skills and talents, but to expect them to live up to unattainable standards, such as your own, dooms them to failure. Know their limitations, and your own. All of this involves the instructor to take the time, effort and interest in actually knowing each student as the individual they truly are, both in and outside of the school setting. Failure to do so limits the effectiveness of any type of learning endeavor. The only losers in such a situation are the students themselves and may be detrimental to the entire educational process. Such loss that may possibly be subtle enough to go unnoticed by all those involved. My education philosophy is not one thousand words in length, nor do I believe that any such personal mission statement should be expected to accomplish this feat. To do so would cloud its importance in vague assumptions and possibly pompous platitudes. It should be seen every day in the success, failure, effort, sacrifices, and abilities of the individual student, not in words and phrases with questionable intentions. There were 3 types of variables involved in the experiment Independent Variable: The light a plant is exposed to during photosynthesis (room light or light from a 120 watt lamp). Dependent Variable: The rate of photosynthesis of a plant exposed solely to either room or lamp light. Controlled Variables: Amount of light the plant receives, the intensity of the light, type of light bulb, the amount of time the plant is exposed to one type of light, the type of plant, health of plant, age of plant, amount of oxygen the plants are exposed to, amount of carbon dioxide the plants are exposed to, amount of water the plant receives, amount of water the leaf disks are soaked in, amount of bicarbonate in the water solution, the intensity of the vacuum created. Method: First, we stack many spinach leaves, and with the straw, we punch 10-15 uniform leaf disks for each Petri dish. After that we prepare 100 ml of bicarbonate solution in the water aspirator. Once the container is ready, we put the leaf disks into it to infiltrate them with the sodium bicarbonate solution. We seal the container and immediately connect it to the faucet, we turn the water on (both hot and cold) and let it run for about a minute. After that we turn the water off and unseal the container. With doing so, the air spaces in the leaf disks are infiltrated causing the disks to sink. At this point, we are ready to transfer the leaf disks into the Petri dishes for the experiment. We fell the three Petri dishes with h inch of the 0. 05% solution and transform 10-15 leaf disks into each. Then we place the first Petri dish which is covered under the light source and we put the beaker on top of it, the beaker will be filled with IL of cold water to act as a heat filter and then we start the timer. At the end of each 10 min, we observe and record the number of floating disks. Continue observing the leaf disks until the end of the mini. As of the second Petri dish, we cover the sis and keep it at the room light and watch it and keep recording the floating disk every 10 min. Finally the third Petri dish, will not be exposed to light at all, so it will be covered with aluminum foil and will be kept for the whole 40 min. In order to see how many disk floated in that period. Results: For this experiment, we measured how long it takes for spinach plants to photosynthesis under a room light and also a Iamb (light source). We timed how many leaf disks rose in 10/20/30/40 minute duration under a room light, a lamp (light source) and in the dark as well. The results came out positive purporting the hypothesis as shown on the results section of the attached Raw Data Sheet. We then calculated the average amount of time it took the spinach leaves to photosynthesis under each amount of light, graphed these averages in order to show our results. The Y axis on our graph shows the number of floating leaf disks and the X axis represents the average time it took for the leaf disks to rise. (Duration was forty minutes. ) According to our data, the leaf disks exposed to lamp light rose faster, as shown in the graph below. Discussion: I think that the concentration of Bicarbonate could have affected our results. While the oxygen is removed from all leaf disks we picked, there was some of them might have been more thoroughly infiltrated than others. For example, when we picked the disks, some of them sank immediately while others took a while. Also possible that when we distributed the leaf disks, we may have put some of the leaf disks that were not infiltrated under the room light. Because they already had some oxygen in them, they could have been more likely to float quicker. Additionally, there are other factors could have influenced our results detrimentally, as well. In addition, although this method is an easy way to measure the rate of photosynthesis, it is not the most accurate. Cellular respiration, a process that uses the oxygen produced during light reactions, could have occurred. If the oxygen produced by the leaf disks was used during cellular respiration, the leaf disks might not have risen even though they did photosynthesis. I think to improve this experiment next time; we have to keep all these factors in mind, also make sure to pick the leaves off the spinach plant ourselves, or at least ascertain the health and age of both the leaves we use ND the plant they are from, not to mentioned doing the vacuuming process as well. In general, for future experiments, I would allot more time and have more materials and do the whole process. Conducting such an experiment inspired me to conduct similar experiments, testing the rate of photosynthesis under even more conditions. I would want to test and see whether photosynthesis occurs faster when plants are exposed to the sun light (outdoor). Overall, this experiment was a good learning experience. It helped me learn how to put together an experiment and pay attention to even the minute details that can significantly alter ones results.
